On Monday, August 19, 2013, the Public Accounts Committee expressed shock at foreign exchange retention schemes operated by mining companies in the country and asked for investigations to be carried out with immediate effect.

The committee had just begun to examine reports of the Auditor-General and the interest triggered by the issue prompted the Chairman of the committee to halt discussions and ask for members with concerns to wait until the committee moves into a closed door meeting.

The Head of Policy and Partnership at WaterAid Ghana, Mr Ibrahim Musah, has lamented the excessive loss of treated water that is unaccounted for, when many parts of the country are still lacking in terms of water provision.

Entreating community members across the country to expose members who illegally connect and siphon water, he called on Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to also deal with the numerous gallons of treated unaccounted for water that does not reach consumers in the process of distribution.

The Government of Ghana has been asked as a key measure of improving access to water, to disseminate the water policy to the majority of Ghanaians, to enhance implementation of the policy.

Head of Policy and Partnership at WaterAid Ghana, Mr Ibrahim Musah, said policy distribution or dissemination by translating it into local languages for the citizenry to understand has not been done.

On April 5^th, the world began the 1,000-day countdown to the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) deadline. Created in 2000, the MDGs spurred action from governments, international organizations, and civil society.

In recent years, we have cut the global poverty rate in half, reduced the prevalence of deadly diseases, improved sanitation, narrowed the gender gap, and more. Although we have made progress toward these Goals, there is still much to be done, especially for the girls and women of the Muslim world.
